Scientists Map the Global Spread of a DNA-Damaging Gut Microbe

A genomic and metagenomic survey across 45 countries finds that one bacterial lineage, Escherichia marmotae, dominates global carriage of a DNA-damaging toxin gene cluster linked to colorectal tumor growth in lab models; based on the study's abstract only, full text not obtained.

A Gut MicroRNA Controls Whether Bile Acids Can Calm Colon Inflammation

A mouse and human-cell study links a microRNA called miR-29a to gut bacterial bile-acid processing and colitis severity. Mice lacking it developed worse colitis, converted less of a protective bile acid, and their gut cells lost some of that bile acid's anti-inflammatory power - a plausible mechanism, not yet confirmed in humans.

Gut Bacteria Link to Alzheimer’s Mostly Vanishes – Except One Microbe

Reprocessing four public Alzheimer's gut-microbiome datasets through one pipeline found that most previously reported bacterial signatures don't hold up across independent cohorts. Only one genus, Lachnospira, consistently tracked with Alzheimer's status in all four studies - a preliminary, correlational finding from a single unreviewed preprint.

Transplanting Gut Bacteria From Mushroom-Fed Mice Protected Other Mice’s Livers

A novel polysaccharide purified from black wood-ear mushroom (Auricularia heimuer) protected mice from acetaminophen-induced liver injury, but antibiotic depletion of gut bacteria erased the effect and fecal transplants from treated mice reproduced it, showing the gut microbiota is mechanistically required. The likely driver is a microbial metabolite, trigonelline, acting through the AMPK/GSK3β and Nrf2/HO-1 pathways. The work is mouse-only with small groups.

Scientists Built a Cell-by-Cell Map of How 6 Infections Rewire the Gut Lining

Researchers built GutPath, a single-cell and spatial atlas of over 500,000 mouse gut cells across six infections, uncovering a previously unknown enterocyte state that clusters around Yersinia-induced immune lesions and appears driven by STAT1/STAT3/IL-18 signaling. The work is mouse-only with small group sizes, and the cell-lesion link is correlational, not causally tested.
