Findings supported by strong, consistent human evidence — large studies, randomized controlled trials, or meta-analyses. This is the closest microbiome science gets to settled.
BioMeSci is an independent publication covering the science of the microbiome — the vast communities of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes that live in and on the human body and throughout the natural world, from the human gut and skin to soil and the oceans. Our job is to translate new, peer-reviewed research into clear, accurate, jargon-free reporting for clinicians, researchers, and curious readers alike.
Microbiome science is one of the most consequential and fastest-moving areas of modern biology — and also one of the most over-hyped. BioMeSci exists to close the gap between what a study actually shows and how it gets reported. We cover the evidence plainly, tell you how strong it is, and never oversell a result. If a finding comes from a dish of cells or a handful of mice, we say so. If it is backed by large human trials, we say that too.
Every article we publish carries one of three evidence labels, so you always know how much weight a finding can bear:
Findings supported by strong, consistent human evidence — large studies, randomized controlled trials, or meta-analyses. This is the closest microbiome science gets to settled.
Promising human evidence that is still early, limited, or based on association rather than proof. Worth knowing about, but not yet the final word.
Early-stage science — often from animal, cell, or laboratory studies — that has not yet been tested in people. Scientifically interesting, but far from your medicine cabinet.
BioMeSci’s reporting is produced by a team of dedicated science writers and editors. Full biographies and areas of focus are available on each writer’s profile page.
